Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
