Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
